Redifining Leadership

“Leadership is influence-nothing more, nothing less.”
-John C. Maxwell-
The emphasis on leadership in various fields is very much noticed since leadership is applicable to even the most personal activity we are doing. Leadership is always associated with politics and organization.
Nevertheless, the concept of leadership is not only bounded by the planning and implementation skills in events. The impression on leadership is something complex rather than just the simple idea of instructing and implementing plans.
Leadership is something between the leader and the follower. In leadership there is rapport between the two. The leader building his credibility and integrity for the follower to realize that he or she is worthy of emulating and obeying. This is achieved by showing good character and pursuing personal relationship with everyone in the group he or she is leading.
There are two kinds of leaders, Positional leaders and Strong (referred to as true leaders) leaders. These two differ from each other by the influence they have and how they relate to their constituents. Positional leaders are people whose main power in leading comes from their position or status. They think that they deserve to lead, for they have the position. They are most prone to failure for they do not really posses the necessary skills needed in managing people. Strong leaders on the other hand practice relational leadership. “Real leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand” according to John C. Maxwell, known as America’s leadership expert, is the founder of the INJOY group, an organization dedicated to helping people maximize their personal and leadership potential. Real leaders develop respect. Even without an event to organize, these people are given compliments. These leaders’ have had lasting impact on the people they have handled not just merely having good results in the work they have done but targeting the personal growth of each of his or her member. Their priority is not of the success of any activity nor event but their success is contributing to the character of the people they are working with. These leaders build trust. To build trust, a leader must exemplify competence, connection and character. Trust is the foundation of leadership which strong leaders try to achieve.
In the Philippine context in general, politicians employ a positional type of leadership. They serve the Filipino society and lead the nation because they are in the position. This is substantiated by the excellence of both government related organization and non-government institutions pursuits to oust specific political actor. Only a list of individuals in the Philippine history can be seen as strong leaders; the ones who truly employed leadership in which the Filipino society was empowered.
Leadership exists when influence is present and we cannot call a leader without having influence. To have a clearer view of this, we must look at the greatest leader that the world had which was Jesus Christ.
Jesus being the Son of the living God had a life of great influence not only in the times before ascending to heaven and seated at the right hand throne of the father but also up until now. People are following him through faith. He had developed his credibility as a leader by being wise and performing miracles for the world to know that he is God. He had also emphasized his love to us through his teachings touching every life who hears his promises. Since he is God (as claims of Christians), the assurance of his love is very much true and real.
Jesus as a leader also had constituents of his disciples which also justifies his effectiveness as a leader. His disciples obeyed everything he says. Even though Peter had denied him before his crucifixion and Judas Escariot forsaking him for money, after his resurrection the disciple followed him still. This was a great example of influence. The disciples had obeyed his last commandment in Mathew 28:18 “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, the son and of the holy spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of age” (NIV). Until this very time this commandment is done by other people, sharing the word of God to the rest of the world. This is the best example of influence and leadership.
Leadership ability verifies a person’s level of effectiveness. The greater the impact you want to make in the society the greater the efforts you must exert in developing yourself as a leader and efforts to influence other. Your performance as a leader determines the impact you are contributing to your institution or even the people you are leading.

life is like a great meal. It is composed of wonderful ingredients we call experiences, made through different processes we call growth and made by the Chef we call God. i'm an amateur cook and i would like to share some of my favorite recipes and some experiments. I only judge base on a personal preference. I believe that good food comes from a good heart.
